Unusual rainbow

On Thursday (Canada Day), Mom and I stopped at our favourite hot dog and ice cream stand, in Kemptville. While we were having our ice cream, we saw this incredible rainbow. It was a complete bow, and really vivid.

I suddenly realized I had my camera and dug it out but the battery was dying. I was trying to find my other battery which I appear to have lost. The OTHER one was charging at home.

I had to keep letting the camera rest because the battery revives once or twice once it dies, if you let it rest.

I finally got a last shot and the battery died completely.

However, this shot shows something I have never seen before. Below the rainbow are several repeated rows of colour. At one point, there was a reverse of the rainbow below but as it was fading out, there were at least three rainbows right under the main bow.

I’ve enhanced the colour so you can see them better in the photos.

Oh GREAT! Yet another virtual shiny object to keep me busy.

Actually, this has to be the coolest and most useful add-on. You can look up websites, reference, find images, shop, translate, find the exchange rate or price in  all the major currencies, and… and… and… lots of other stuff, simply by highlighting a word on a web page.

Watch the video.

AususTek Eco-friendly laptop

While it isn’t going to cure the world’s eco problems overnight, every little bit counts.

Ausus has unveiled its eco-friendly bamboo-clad laptop.

U6V Bamboo

U6V Bamboo

“ASUS has achieved international renown for its research into, and inspired use of, biodegradable materials such as leather in its products, but its decision to embrace bamboo is nothing short of ingenious. Through the use of bamboo which has an immense tensile strength that rivals that of many metal alloys, the ASUS Bamboo notebook is highly resilient – an attribute proven conclusively by the fact that it is the first notebook to have survived the unforgiving conditions of snow-capped Qomolangma Peak, which stands at a staggering height of 8,848 meters (29,028 feet). “

Naysayers point to the fact that trees are a “renewable resource”. They conveniently forget that while trees ARE renewable, they do not regenerate on their own and require planting, are easily damaged in the planting, and require years to grow to the point where they can be harvested.  Bamboo, on the other hand, regenerates itself, requires no care or management, and with less cost outlay, reaps high reward.

“Bamboo also has a renewal rate that no other plant can match. It has been known to grow 60cm in just 24 hours, reaching its maximum height in several years. Bamboo is also capable of regenerating itself upon harvesting without necessitating replanting, making it possibly the perfect renewable resource.”

Of course, there will always be people who pooh-pooh the small steps towards solutions to eco-problems as not “curing” all the world’s problems and, therefor, not worth bothering with. The fact is that ANY small change we can make is PART of the eventual solution. You can’t build a house with one brick, but many with many bricks.

New Toy…

Well, less a “toy” than a necessary computer accessory.

Price Club/Costco had a range of the Western Digital external and portable hard drives available and I got my sister to pick up a portable one for me. The Passport Elite has a range of storage capacity versions from 250 gb to 500 gb. I got the 320 gb one for $119.00 CDN.  It is about the size of a pocket notebook and uses a USB cable (which is the same type as I need for my Bamboo Tablet and my digital camera. It comes with a USB cable but it is really too short to hook to my own computer but it is handy for when I have to take stuff to and from work. It also comes with a carrying case.

I transferred all my photos and videos I currently have stored on my internal hard-drive, plus all my music and have something like 318 gbs free. That means I should be able to download many of the photos I have stored on Fotki.

As an added bonus for people who have a laptop as well as desktop, it comes with software which allows you to sync all your programs you need and automatically update everything. It also allows you to manage and store your Outlook email from anywhere. Since everything is stored on the encrypted drive, nothing is actually shared if, for instance, you have to use an internet cafe somewhere

WD Sync™ synchronization and encryption software lets you take your critical data with you. Plug My Passport into any PC, edit files, read e-mail, and view photos. Then sync all of your changes back to your home or office computer. Your data is protected with 128-bit encryption. (Windows only)

For the desktop versions, you can snazz them up using a variety of custom skins.
