Benjamin

I was testing out my new HD video camera

Amber

We’ll probably take his ashes out to the old farm and ask if we can sprinkle him where Cutie is buried.

Cat shit…

A few weeks ago, for about $10 (on sale), I bought a great mat to go under Benjamin’s cat box. I was getting tired of finding chunks of the silica crystal litter all over the floor and, worse, standing on one in the night. Those things hurt! And they stick to your feet.

Most of the mats I have seen are small faux grass mats which the cats hate the feel of so they kust jump over. This is a large mat made of a rubberized material. The little sticks to it but is easily swept up or you can pick up the mat and knock the bits back into the box. Plus, it is “reasonably” attractive…. sort of… It isn’t ugly, let’s put it that way.

Because the box is in the bathroom and this thing breathes, it doesn’t soak up water and get all mildewy and mouldy.

And, you can cut it to the size you want, as well.

On an unhappy note, our friend Selene’s 12 year old Tortoiseshell, Kari, had not been eating, drinking or pooping for several days. She took her to the vet on Thursday and the vet seemed to think it was allergies. She gave her Prednisone. But on Friday night, she was worse and when I went over on Saturday, she was panting and her lips and gums were white.

We took Kari to the animal hospital and they said it was congestive heart failure. They could give her some meds and she might live another year but that her quality of life would be diminished. Selene decided to let her go.

Selene said that she hadn’t cried in 12 years and she wasn’t going to start now… but she cried and cried… She was so distraught that she was unable to tell the vet “Yes” to give the shot. So I had to do it.

I felt terrible. Selene initially decided not to stay in the room when Kari was given the injection but I said that she might regret staying in the room but she would likely regret NOT having stayed in the room, more. So she stayed.

PhotoHunter: “Cuddly”???? Not….

Just a note… these are not my photos. I have NO photos of anything “cuddly” (and believe me, I LOOKED!). I have photos of my cat but while he LOOKS cuddly he just isn’t. So I cheated this time around. In my defence, I TRIED to take Basil’s photo one time but he immediately ran away and hid under the couch and refused to come out. These photo are one’s taken by my friend Krys.

Possibly one of the least cuddly cats on the planet. What this series of photos just doesn’t capture is just how orange Basil’s eyes are… Pumpkin orange… Creepy!

PhotoHunt: Balance (making up for last week…)

This is to balance out my error of posting this week’s challenge LAST week

Pink-eye???...

…that I spotted someone looking back at me from this Spottted Joe Pye Weed. Can you spot him? (HA! A two-for-one! Or is that three-for-one?).

PhotoHunter: “Undesirable” Warning! Photos may be disturbing!

Warning! The second photo may be disturbing for some.

undesirable [ˌʌndɪˈzaɪərəbəl]

adj

not desirable or pleasant; objectionable

Nature has a way of reminding us that life is sometimes short and often ends unpleasantly.

I posted the first image in the November 22nd PhotoHunter, “Bird(s)”. This poor bird was trapped in an abandoned building. I found it when I was photographing the town of Claremont, Ontario, which is mostly boarded up and slated for demolition for the Pickering Airport. I cannot imagine how it suffered before finally  succumbing to exhaustion and/or starvation.

"Trapped"

Early one Spring, when I was out taking photos near Wakefield, Quebec, I came across this cat carcass. Whether it had been hit by a car and went into the field to die, froze to death, or what, I don’t know.

What was particularly disturbing to me was that, aside from the black toes and gums, it looked so like my Benjamin.

Still, it is life and death… The way of the World.

Chat du jour

Mademoiselle Fifi (or Mlle. Paree)

via Shorpy

Mademoiselle Fifi was the chat du John Moisant who flew the English Channel. She flew with him (and his mechanic), being the first cat to cross the Channel by plane, I understand.

He later died in a crash near New Orleans. From what I can tell, Mademoiselle Fifi is dressed up for the funeral. I haven’t been able to confirm this but it looks that way, anyway. What a lovely kitty kat!
